In the American Civil War, rifle units such as the 1st United States Sharp Shooters (in the Federal army) wore green jackets while other units wore more conspicuous colours this was the start of camouflage as we know it today. Its a method used by animals in nature, its used to protect the military and their equipment. We see it in everyday without really considering it.
